Florida rap is having a resurgence and undergoing a renewal of musical spirit. It’s rich rap lineage stretches back to the late 1980s and early 1990s is now shaping a modern new sound for the state. Hailing from St. Petersburg, Florida, Five Drexler is a driven, passionate and charismatic artist with a unique approach to his blend of hip-hop. His sound is all about connecting listeners through high-energy release, uplifting melodies, beat with a Dirty South twist and thought-provoking lyrics. Together with fellow artists Dangeruss and General Lee, Five Drexler is a part of The Treblemakers, a quickly rising and unapologetic bunch on a quest to make their mark on the music scene.
It’s amazing Five Drexler isn’t bigger than he is by now. He seems prepackaged for underground rap heads, complete with an emotional side that makes him more than a technical MC. But Drexler is also one of the harder spitters in this up-and-coming Florida group, and he’s at his best when he kicks his flow into a faster gear.
He’s latest single project, “Smokers Section (Where It At)” clearly shows that he has an exquisite ear for production and an ability to needle any beat he rhymes on, his ceiling is high.
Five Drexler has also dropped an excellent video in support of the single, demonstrating his will to blaze his own path, and survive with support from the streets. His catalog is in it’s early building stages, but it already displays his never compromising sound, which should continuously help him gain steam by staying true to a style that’s lyrically dense but accessible enough to have wide appeal.
There is a raw and honest element to Five Drexler music that can’t be replicated through technique. His steady delivery on “Smokers Section (Where It At)” puts emphasis on the feeling behind his words, like he’s looking you straight in the eye while he is rapping.
If the theory that we need more thinkers than rappers, is true then Five Drexler’s music sounds thoughtful in an industry where quantity tends to take priority over quality. He lays his blunt concepts and philosophies on the line, and whether or not you agree with them, you’ll still find yourself engaged and listening, due to his magnetic flow and rhyming skill.
Striking a balance between grit and groove, “Smokers Section (Where It At)” puts Drexler squarely onto the scene. A handful of regional and national stars have emerged from the Sunshine State in the course of the past few years. There is no reason why Five Drexler cannot join that list.
