In the fast-evolving world of hip-hop, few artists manage to stand the test of time while staying true to their roots. TABLEEK, a key figure in the genre’s underground scene, has not only defied expectations but continuously pushed the boundaries of creativity and self-expression. As a founding member of the revered group Maspyke, and now a pioneering solo artist, TABLEEK’s journey is a testament to the power of independence, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to authenticity.
TABLEEK’s entrance into the hip-hop world came with a bang. Signed straight out of high school to Head Up Entertainment/Elektra Records alongside his crew Maspyke, he was thrust into the industry spotlight. The trio, consisting of TABLEEK, Hanif-Jamiyl, and producer Roddy Rod, quickly made waves with their diverse sound, blending elements of jazz, soul, and gritty lyricism. Collaborating with artists like jazz icon Ronny Jordan, R&B songstress Chante Moore (“This Time”), and hip-hop pioneer Doug E. Fresh(“Aight!”), Maspyke showcased their versatility, earning the attention of both mainstream and underground audiences.
However, despite the early success, it became clear that the label did not fully share Maspyke’s creative vision. Rather than conform to industry expectations, they chose to reclaim their artistic freedom, negotiating a release from Elektra. This bold move was a defining moment in TABLEEK’s career, setting the stage for what would become his lifelong commitment to independence.
Determined to chart their own course, TABLEEK and Maspyke founded Bukarance Records, marking the beginning of their journey into underground hip-hop. Free from the constraints of major labels, the trio released a series of underground classics that continue to resonate with fans and collectors alike. Albums like “The Gong Show”, “54th Regiment”, “Played List”, and “Truth In Position” were celebrated by tastemakers across the globe, from Stretch and Bobbito (NYC) to Giles Peterson (UK), and from DJ Premier (NYC) to DJ Revolution (LA). These projects showcased Maspyke’s commitment to staying true to their sound—a rich blend of boom-bap beats, introspective lyrics, and jazz-inspired instrumentation.
Maspyke’s 2005 release, ‘STATIC’, solidified their status as one of the most important groups in hip-hop. The project earned praise from none other than Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), who dubbed them “one of the most important crews in hip-hop.” Standout tracks like “Step” and “No Big Deal” have become enduring classics, still spinning on turntables across the world, embodying the timeless essence of Maspyke’s music.
After Maspyke began a hiatus in 2011, TABLEEK found himself at a pivotal moment in his life. Real-world pressures collided with his passion for music, leading to a period of reflection and reinvention. He continued to create, collaborating with international artists such as Finland’s Jusso, Ireland’s Gareth Frequency, France’s Jazz Liberators, and Japan’s DJ Mitsu, further expanding his creative horizons.
During this time, TABLEEK realized that the changing dynamics of the music industry—dominated by evolving technology and new distribution models—offered a fresh opportunity. With a vision for complete creative control, he co-founded BurntBerry Music, a label designed to embrace the freedom of independence in a world where traditional music industry structures were becoming obsolete.
Under BurntBerry Music, TABLEEK released two deeply personal albums: “Hunting Bald Eagle…and Other Ghetto Tales” and “A Deepest Blue.” These records stand as profound political and creative statements, addressing the complexities of being a Muslim emcee in the 21st century, while maintaining the signature soul and jazz-infused hip-hop that has always defined his work. Both projects are more than just albums—they are statements of defiance, resilience, and self-empowerment in a world that often tries to silence the voices of the marginalized.
After years of pushing boundaries and establishing his solo career, TABLEEK is ready to bless the world once again with fresh music that harks back to the roots of Maspyke. His latest single, “Lost”, is the first track recorded for his upcoming EP “Inside Looking Out,” set to release in November. Reuniting with longtime collaborator Roddy Rod (known for his work with Q-Tip), TABLEEK promises to deliver the kind of soulful, thought-provoking hip-hop that his fans have been craving.
Speaking about the new single, TABLEEK reflects, “’Lost’ is the first record that I recorded with Roddy Rod for the new EP we’re dropping in November. If you were a fan of the Maspyke joints over the years, you should be pleased to hear this.” It’s a return to the sound that made Maspyke one of the most revered crews in hip-hop—a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking, deeply rooted in jazz, soul, and boom-bap traditions.
TABLEEK’s journey from major label beginnings to underground legend and now an independent visionary is one of perseverance and unwavering integrity. While the music industry has shifted dramatically since his early days, his commitment to authenticity has remained constant. His live performances—an intoxicating mix of bass-heavy beats and socially conscious lyricism—pay homage to hip-hop greats like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Kool G Rap, and Large Professor, all while crafting his unique space within the genre.
As fans eagerly await the release of “Inside Looking Out,” TABLEEK continues to embody the essence of hip-hop: innovation, authenticity, and a deep connection to the culture. With “Lost” already generating buzz, there’s no doubt that TABLEEK is once again about to remind the world why his voice—and his vision—are so vital to the fabric of hip-hop today.
In a time where much of the industry chases trends, TABLEEK remains a beacon of originality, reminding us that independence isn’t just about avoiding the mainstream—it’s about defining your path, speaking your truth, and, most importantly, staying connected to the roots of the culture that shaped you. TABLEEK is, and always will be, one of the important voices in hip-hop. And with his latest work on the horizon, it’s clear that his journey is far from over.
